The first trailer for the Rohit Shetty spin-off film shows Akshay Kumar as a no-nonsense ATS officer determined to halt a terrorist attack on Mumbai.

Rohit Shetty's upcoming film Sooryavanshi (2020) takes the machismo, action and patriotism of his previous films and multiplies it threefold. A spin-off of his previous films, Singham (2011) and Simmba (2018), this action drama is the story of Veer Sooryavanshi (Akshay Kumar), who heads the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) in Mumbai.

Ajay Devgn's Singham narrates the trailer to give us an introduction to Sooryavanshi, who is tracking an upcoming terrorist strike on Mumbai, most likely by a sleeper cell from a group called the Lashkar. He interrogates a long list of possible villains who seem to be led by a character played by Jackie Shroff, who is operating from outside India.

Sooryavanshi gets so involved in his hunt for the terrorists that he puts the well-being of his own child at risk. Katrina Kaif plays his wife in the film. Eventually, he ropes in Singham and Simmba (Ranveer Singh) in his quest to prevent the attack.

Will the three heroes make it in time? Obviously, but there will be a few cars flying and many explosions along the way.

Akshay Kumar also channels Tom Cruise with a daring helicopter stunt. Both Devgn and Ranveer Singh get heroic entries in slow motion to add to the entertainment. Their introductions are cut in a way that merges the background score and sound effects for maximum value.

Like most films of this genre, Sooryavanshi has familiar villains, but it remains to be seen how it will treat the religious tensions in the plot, given the current state of the nation after the Delhi riots.

The film is due to be released in theatres on 24 March. Watch the trailer below and let us know if you are keen to watch the film.
