Directed by Indra Kumar, the film is a light-hearted saga revolving around the workings of the mythological god Chitragupt.

The makers of Indra Kumar’s Thank God (2022) revealed yesterday that the film will have Ajay Devgn in the role of lord Chitragupt. According to Hindu mythology, he judges people’s karma after their death and decides whether they deserve to go to either heaven or hell.

But the trailer of the movie is about a man Ayan Kapoor (Sidharth Malhotra) stuck in limbo between life and death, hauled to Chitragupt’s court after he meets with a serious accident. In order to assess his life so far, Chitragupt lists down Ayan’s wrongdoings while the latter tries to justify them.

Despite the film being about a man’s morality, it falls in the category of a light-hearted genre. Apart from the meta joke on Devgn’s Singham (2011), the intended jokes don’t quite have you in splits. Devgn’s character makes a problematic sexist joke stating it doesn't suit women to use curse words.

The makers have bought the Hindi rights of Yohani’s Sinhala-language song ‘Manike Mage Hithe’ and the song’s tune is played throughout the trailer.

Devgn shines in the trailer as he commands respect as a modern-day Chitragupt. Malhotra is passable while Rakul Preet Singh, who we don’t see much of, doesn’t seem believable as a police officer.

Produced by T-Series, Maruti International and Anand Pandit Motion Pictures, Thank God is due to be released in theatres on 25 October on Diwali.
