Director Shashanka Ghosh's Veere Di Wedding established a strong and effective presence at the box office with Rs10.75crore opening day collections, according to Boxofficeindia.com. It is the highest opening day ever for a film with female leads, as it beats the existing records of Rs8.61crore of Tanu Weds Manu Returns (2015), and The Dirty Picture at Rs9.16 crore back in 2011.

The film, led by Sonam Kapoor Ahuja, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Swara Bhasker and Shikha Talsania, has managed to go against the adage of female led films not proving commercial successes. With such a strong opening, the makers of the film can rest easy over the weekend.

The impressive opening day numbers are down to the novelty of the free-spirited characters portrayed on screen. There is an element of curiousity associated with the film, as it offers a very different perspective from the usual portrayal of leading ladies in film.

Trade analyst Atul Mohan told Cinestaan.com, "We were expecting in the range of Rs7-8crore. Well, this is what youngsters at the cinema want — entertainment entertainment entertainment."

Mohan added that the collection of the film is a significant move ahead from films like Lipstick Under My Burkha (2016), which broke the myth of "female-centric" films. He said, "This is something new. Moving forward from Lipstick Under My Burkha, breaking the conservative stereotypes. While this has brought some family audience, it is the youngsters who are enjoying the most."

However, Sonam's brother, Harshvardhan Kapoor's film Bhavesh Joshi Superhero seems to be struggling with a collection of Rs25-30 lakh on the opening day.

With a strong weekend expected to bring in word of mouth and family audiences to the theatre, Veere Di Wedding might see Sonam win the battle of the siblings by a mile.

Mohan said, "The next three days will see the film continue in the range of Rs10crore. It is likely to see Rs30+ crore in collections over the weekend."
