Ritesh Batra Biography

Born : 12 June 1979, in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India

Film Director Ritesh Batra came into the limelight with his critically acclaimed film The Lunchbox (2013), starring Irrfan Khan, Nawazuddin Siddique and Nimrit Kaur. He was nominated for the prestigious BAFTA award for this movie. The writer-director was born into a middle class family in Mumbai and dreamt of making films since an early age. He did his schooling in Mumbai at AVM High School and went to the United States of America to complete his higher studies. Batra was employed with Deloitte as a consultant after graduating in Economics from Drake University, Iowa. However, after three years, his aspirations of becoming a film maker took over and he attended the New York University to learn the same, but dropped out.

Batra started his career by writing and directing short films that were screened at over 40 international film festivals and won many awards. After the initial success, he became a part of the Sundance Screenwriters and Directors lab with his project Story of Ram (2009). This film won him two prestigious awards, the Time Warner Story Telling Fellow at the Sundance Film Festival and Annenberg Fellow at the Sundance Film Academy.

In the year 2011, Batra returned to India to make a documentary on the lunchbox delivery system (dabbawalas) in Mumbai. It was this project that gave rise to concept for the film The Lunchbox (2013). The film premiered at the Cannes Critics Week 2013 and won Rail d’Or (Grand Golden Rail). The film was credited with highest grossing foreign film in America, Europe and Australia for the year of 2014.
