Amrita Arora was born and brought up in Chembur, Mumbai. She appeared in her very first commercial, an ad for nappies, at the age of two along with her sister Malaika Arora, who is also a popular Bollywood actress and model, and the wife of Arbaaz Khan. She studied at Swami Vivekananda High School, and began her career as a model soon after. She appeared in several music videos as well as ad campaigns including those for Ponds, Elle 18 and Sunsilk. At the age of seventeen, she began getting recognition as a regular video jockey on MTV India after winning their MTV VJ Hunt
, going on to host two shows for the channel – MTV House Full
and MTV Chillout
Arora made her film debut with the romantic drama Kitne Door Kitne Paas
(2002). Though the film did not do well, it got her some recognition as an actress, and her second film, a comedy called Awara Paagal Deewana
(2002), fared better with audiences. After that, she starred along with Isha Koppikar in Girlfriend
(2004), a film which garnered a lot of controversy, due to its themes of homosexuality. Arora herself stands by the film, claiming "It kind of got confused in the whole sleaze fest that was going on at that stage. I wish it were treated more sensitively rather than going commercial.”
Over the next five years, Arora acted in several films including Speed (2007) and Red (2007) both of which, like Girlfriend (2004), are thrillers. She appeared in a supporting role in Kambakkht Ishq (2009), a romantic comedy, playing the friend of her close friend in real life, Kareena Kapoor.
The same year, her film Ek Tho Chance (2009), another thriller, first screened at the 14th International Film Festival of Kerala, but is yet to be released commercially in theatres. Scheduled for a show in theatres later in 2014, the film will break a five year hiatus by Arora in terms of new releases.
Arora is currently based in Mumbai with her husband Shakeel Ladak and their two sons Azaan and Rayaan.
