The film opens with a montage of dramatic enactments portraying the monotonous corporate life of Ved (Ranbir Kapoor). who is encouraged by Tara (Deepika Padukone) to have and pursue dreams. In a flashback young Dev goes to a roadside storyteller (Piyush Mishra) who narrates tales based on various myths. Back in the present, Tara meets Ved in Corsica where both are holidaying. They become friends, on the condition that they will never disclose their real identities to each other. Throughout their stay, they play characters and converse in stilted filmi dialogues. Despite beginning to have feelings for Ved, Tara leaves for India. Back home, she starts taking care of her father's business but cannot get Ved off her mind. After four years, while working in Delhi, she suddenly comes across him. This time they disclose their true identities and start dating. However, Tara cannot relate to Ved the product manager who leads a routine life that begins with alarm clocks and dates like a robot. Ved proposes to Tara on her birthday, but she turns him down expressing her dilemma. Ved initially pretends to take it as a part of life but eventually breaks down. He veers between normalcy and sudden emotional breakdown. His unexpected behaviour causes him to lose his job. Ved, despite much effort, cannot get back to his old life. He decides to spend some time back home in the hills. On being asked by Ved about the end of the story of his life, the now aged storyteller scoffs at him and asks him to look into his heart so that he can reach the end himself.
