Shatranj Ke Khilari is a film directed by Satyajit Ray, featuring Sanjeev Kumar, Saeed Jaffrey and Amjad Khan. It is based on a short story by celebrated Hindi writer Munshi Premchand and tells the tale of the last days of the dysfunctional court of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah of Awadh (Amjad Khan). The nawab is more inclined towards the arts and pleasure than to statecraft, and the British East India Company closes in on his realm through a combination of threats and subterfuge. Even as the nawabdom crumbles on the eve of the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857, Mirza Sajjad Ali (Sanjeev Kumar) and Mir Roshan Ali (Saeed Jaffrey), two of the nobles at Wajid Ali Shah's court, continue their obsession with shatranj, the game of chess, oblivious to the great game of realpolitik being played around them.
