JJ is a simple Jat boy studying at the Hindi college in Delhi, who dreams of making it big some day. His ambition is ridiculed by his friends. The canteen owner Khatana gives him a piece of advice, that it is only heartbreak that can produce music worth listening to. When JJ sees the performance of Heer Kaul, a St Stephen's student who is a Kashmiri Pandit, and hears that she is known as a heartbreaking machine, he goes on to propose to her, hoping to earn the much coveted heart break that would make him a musical star. Of course, she rejects and humiliation ensues. But the two become fast friends, bonding over various indulgences. When Heer marries Jai, a fellow Kashmiri, despite being in love with JJ, their lives go haywire. JJ finds the fame he so desired, yet in some way his life seems meaningless.
