The film depicts the tales of four women in a Gujarat village struggling through their lives controlled by the age-old practices of a male-dominated society and various other social evils. Rani (Tannishtha Chatterjee), a widow for half her adult life, and best friend Lajjo (Radhika Apte), a skilled seamstress, work for a local entrepreneur Kishan (Sumeet Vyas). Lajjo and Rani are friends with Bijli (Surveen Chawla) who is an erotic dancer and also entertains men overcome by carnal desire. The men of the village are insecure of their skills and development, and are resolute in continuing the lifestyle lived by their forefathers. Rani with all her might tries to get her son Gulab (Riddhi Sen) a beautiful bride Janaki (Lehar Khan). Lajjo is unable to conceive as her alcoholic husband Manoj (Mahesh Balraj) is impotent, but is still battered by him every night. Hemmed in by daily nightmares, the private world of these four women is full of dreams, desires and uninhibited talk about men, love and sex. The revelations of the darker sides of the characters at the centre of the tale are woven into the narration of the film. The plot begins to take an unexpected turn as Rani discovers Janaki to be dishonoured in her village. With Lajjo, exhausted with her daily torment, and Bijli, made insecure by the arrival of a new dancer, Rani and Janaki set out on a journey of their own with a quest for freedom and solace.
