Based on a story by Mahasweta Devi, the film captures the human angle of the Naxalite movement in Calcutta of the 1970s, where people are charged with revolutionary fervour against State injustice. Sujata Chatterjee (Jaya Bachchan) is a traditional housewife who receives news of her 22 year old son Brati&rsquo;s (Joy Sengupta) death. She struggles to find the reasons for his death and as she learns about his beliefs, she begins to question the society that her son had rebelled against and her own relationship to it. <p>The film is directed by Govind Nihalani and received the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi in 1998.</p>
