Vishal Bhardwaj’s adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Haider is set in Kashmir in the 1990s. Haider (Shahid Kapur) is a student who returns home to Kashmir and finds his home in ruins. His father Dr. Hilaal Meer (Narendra Jha) is taken for questioning by the army after he was found guilty of giving medical treatment to a militant. Dr. Meer disappears like several Kashmiris suspected of having links with militants. Meanwhile, Haider’s mother, Ghazala (Tabu) and uncle Khurram (Kay Kay Menon) have started living together, which disgusts Haider. Broken and confused, he sets out to find his father in army camps and police stations. In his quest, he unearths several dark truths including that of his uncle’s political ambitions and betrayal.
