Devdas

Devdas (K. L. Saigal) and Parvati (Jamuna) are childhood friends who grow up and fall in love with each. His father disapproves of the union due to difference in status and caste and sends Devdas to Calcutta for studies. When Devdas returns, he finds that Paro has been married to a much older man. He takes refuge in alcohol and meets the prostitute Chandramukhi (Rajkumari), who is seen as the epitome of beauty. He falls seriously ill due to his drinking but driven by remorse, he tries to fulfil his promise of meeting his true love.
PC Barua's Hindi version of Devdas is an iconic film for Indian cinema that critiques feudalistic society and explores characters caught in a web of unfulfilled desire.
