The tough and passionate leader Anand Verma (Satyendra Kapoor) has a successful trade union, geared towards the cause of helping labourers. He lives with his wife Sumitra Devi (Nirupa Roy) and two sons Vijay (Amitabh Bachchan) and Ravi (Shashi Kapoor). However, a corrupt businessman dislikes the success of Anand's trade union and demands that he stop if he does not want to see his family dead. Having no choice, he complies, earning the wrath of the labourers who attack him for what they see as his betrayal. Feeling immense shame and guilt, Anand abandons his family. This leaves Sumitra on her own to take care of her children and face the ostracism of the worker's community. After they tattoo demeaning words on Vijay's arm, she leaves for Mumbai, hoping to start a new life. The two brothers end up living completely different lives, with Vijay as an underworld smuggler and Ravi as an excellent student who plays by the book. When their lives collide, they must come face to face with their past.
