Kewal (Raj Kapoor) is passionate about theatre; however, he is forced to continue the family tradition of pursuing law as a career. Kewal reluctantly studies law but keeps dreaming of setting up his own theatre company. Eventually, he fails in his exams and is thrown out of the house by his father. Meanwhile, memories of a childhood romance with a girl called Nimmi (Nimmi) haunt Kewal. He keeps looking for her in every other woman and often renames them. As destiny would have it, Kewal has a chance encounter with former theatre company owner Rajan (Premnath), who is also a connoisseur of the arts. Kewal’s dream is finally fulfilled when he is able to fuse his fantasies into his play and discovers a woman (Nargis) rendered homeless by Partition.
