31st October

The film opens with a montage of friendly Delhi neighbourhoods on the morning of 31 October 1984. The images change dramatically as the day progresses and news filters out that prime minister Indira Gandhi has been assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards. A formulated hatred against Sikhs is spread among the masses by politicians. Devender Singh (Vir Das), his wife Tejender Kaur (Soha Ali Khan) and their children are stuck at home as a pogrom breaks out all over the city. While talking to her sister on the phone, Tejender hears her sister getting killed. Terror-struck, Devender calls some of his Hindu friends – Pal (Deep Raj Rana), Tilak (Vineet Sharma), Yogesh (Lakhwinder Lakha) – to help his family out and get them to a safe zone. On the way to help their friend’s family, this group comes face to face with the worst aspects of human nature. They also encounter some corrupt police officers who try to manipulate them for their own interests. The fate of Devender’s family rests upon this group of friends who need to fight to retain their humanity in the midst of a savage carnival of hatred.
