The Habitat Film Festival began as a much-needed space that focused solely on Indian cinema. Delhi cinema audiences were missing out on some wonderful cinema that was happening across the country as despite the critical acclaim and accolades, there were films that would not always get a release in the capital. The Festival provided an opportunity for cinema lovers to watch these films.

As the number of Film Festivals in the country multiplied, Regional cinema got relegated to the shadows in all the glamour and glitz chase of International films. The Habitat Film Festival set out to provide a platform to these vibrant stories.

The Habitat Film Festival picks the best films from different states and languages, films that span real life and mirror issues as they are felt today, and reconstruct past times. Films that feature inspiring real life stories of unsung heroes, fictional stories, fantastical stories, as well as hard hitting narratives that interrogate political and social realities. Films that bridge the gap between the metropolis and the outlying and films that may seemingly be dealing with local issues but resonate with societies on a global level.
