Shekhar Kapur’s What’s Love Got To Do With It? (2022) is a light-hearted entertainer which follows Lily James as a documentary filmmaker Zoe who decides to make a film on her friend and neighbour Kaz’s (Shazad Latif) arranged aka ‘assisted’ marriage.

Zoe hasn’t had the best luck in her love life and is still single. She begins to open up and embrace the new path of her friend’s life. Oscar winner Emma Thompson plays Zoe’s mum Cath, while Shabana Azmi plays Kaz’s mum Aisha.

Sajal Aly is Kaz’s Pakistani fiancée while comedian Asim Chaudhry plays a cheeky matchmaker.

The film, written and produced by Jemima Khan, will have its world premieres at the 47th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) this coming week as a Gala Presentation. This is Kapur’s first feature as director since the Cate Blanchett-starrer Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007).

Predictably, the English film shows the clash of cultures, as the Khan family prepare for their big fat ‘arranged’ marriage, and later travel to Pakistan for the wedding. There’s also a big song and dance sequence as the families celebrate the upcoming nuptials.

Zoe and Kaz have many conversations about their different approaches to love, and have a disagreement along the way too. It is likely that their friendship will be repaired by the end of the film.

What’s Love Got To Do With It? is due to be released in the UK on 27 January 2023. An Indian release date has not yet been announced.
