Zindagi is bringing back the Pakistani series Baaghi, based on the honour killing of Fauzia Batool, who rose to become the internet sensation Qandeel Baloch, to the direct-to-home (DTH) services Tata Play, Dish TV, d2h and Airtel TV from 28 June.

In the series, Saba Qamar portrays a young ambitious Baloch girl, Fauzia, from a quaint village, who aspires to become a diva. Also starring Osman Khalid Butt and Ali Kazmi, the series depicts Fauzia’s fight against all odds to carve her own identity.

Directed by Farooq Rind, the series also aims to humanize the late social media sensation, who was killed by her brother at the age of 26 for her exceptional fame and connection to the youth of a conservative society.

Qamar regards Qandeel as a dynamic and feisty personality, who always made headlines for her bold and outspoken nature, which put her life under the scanner.

“When I heard the script, I instantaneously connected with Qandeel's brave and candid nature,” said the actress, who appeared in Zindagi's recent series Mrs & Mr Shameem (2022). “Baaghi captures the essence of her fearless life perfectly. Getting an opportunity to play such a fiery character on screen has been a life-changing experience and I feel nervous yet excited as Zindagi brings the series once again on its DTH services.”

Speaking of the show, Shailja Kejriwal, chief creative officer of Zee Special Projects, shared, “Baaghi is a real-life story that mirrors the vulnerability of personalities in the public domain. It is a reflection of how society looks at social media stars and their lives under the spotlight. Thought-provoking content viewed from a social lens has been a strong focus for the stories we tell at Zindagi. We are proud to be bringing another such one to our audiences.”

Recently, writer-director Alankrita Srivastava, along with producers Vikas Sharma and Sunny Khanna, also announced a feature on Qandeel Baloch, which will be based on Sanam Meher’s book The Sensational Life and Death of Qandeel Baloch, published by Aleph.
