Uunchai will mark Barjatya's return as a director after seven years. His last release was Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015), starring Salman Khan in a double role along with Sonam Kapoor and Anupam Kher. The film was a runaway hit.

Uunchai marks 75 years of the Rajshri Productions banner. It was started by producer Tarachand Barjatya in 1947.

Although the story of Uunchai is being kept under wraps, the makers have said that it's a family movie, like the majority of Rajshri movies.

A statement from the makers read, "Uunchai finished its principal shooting earlier this year. The film was extensively shot in Nepal, Delhi, Mumbai, Agra, Lucknow and Kanpur. It marks director Sooraj R Barjatya’s return to the big screen after seven years. Like all Rajshri films, taking the legacy of wholesome entertainment forward, Uunchai promises to be a complete family entertainer.
