Actor-filmmaker Dhanush and his filmmaker wife Aishwaryaa Rajinikanth announced their decision to part ways after 18 years of marriage.

Dhanush took to Twitter last night to announce the separation from Aishwaryaa, elder daughter of superstar Rajinikanth.

Dhanush wrote, "18 years of togetherness as friends, couple, as parents and well-wishers to each other. The journey has been of growth, understanding, adjusting and adapting. Today we stand at a place where our paths separate."

The star urged people to respect their decision and give them some privacy.

Aishwaryaa shared the same statement on her Instagram page. She wrote: “No caption needed. Only your understanding and love necessary.”

She has directed the Tamil films 3 (2012), Vai Raja Vai (2015) and the documentary Cinema Veeran (2017). Aishwaryaa is currently working on a Telugu-Tamil bilingual for Lyca Productions.

Dhanush and Aishwaryaa were wed in 2004 and have two sons, Lingaa and Yatra.

Dhanush is currently shooting for the Tamil-Telugu bilingual film Vaathi. The Telugu version of the movie has been titled Sir.

Being directed by Venky Atluri, the film will see Dhanush play a professor. The project will mark Dhanush’s debut in the Telugu industry.
