Hey Sinamika song 'Achamillai': Dulquer Salmaan raps about young man's struggles in angsty anthem

Composed by Govind Vasantha, the song features lyrics by Madhan Karky.

Dulquer Salmaan is the latest artiste to pick up the mike to deliver a rap song for a film. The tune, 'Achamillai', composed by Govind Vasantha, is from his romantic comedy Hey Sinamika, which is set to be released in theatres on 25 February 2022. Directed by Brinda Gopal, the film also stars Aditi Rao Hydari and Kajal Aggarwal.

The song features the slogan 'Achamillai Achamillai [no fear]'. The line comes from poet and independence activist Subramania Bharati's famed poem but lyricist Madhan Karky puts his own spin on the slogan. The lyrics speak of the frustrations of a young man who sheds light upon his struggles through childhood and societal pressures. The catchy rap boasts great wordplay but doesn't have the anger or the incision of some of the verses.

Dulquer's slow halting delivery conveniently hides any flaws that a singer might have. Govind Vasantha's composition places emphasis on the lyrics, but it is not delivered with flair. Perhaps a more accomplished rapper than Dulquer would have got the job done. The actor is perhaps a little too mild and polite for the anti-establishment anthem.

Govind said about the song, “When I was composing this song a couple of years back, I had not yet done a proper rap song in my career until then. So it was a big challenge for me to compose this song and hence I was determined to do a good job. I decided to use an amalgamation of rustic elements, chorus and unique sounds in a sort of crazy way. I wanted the song to sound very rich. Brinda Master had also wanted the song to be a dance-oriented song. So it could not be just a content-oriented rap song. It also had to have foot-tapping music. These were the focus points I had when I started composing this song.”

Hey Sinamika has been produced by Jio Studios and will be released in theatres on 25 February 2022.
