It has been a while since Sanjay Leela Bhansali composed music for a film and he does not disappoint with his Gangubai Kathiawadi tracks.
'Meri Jaan' is a lilting composition that has touches of jazz. Replete with horns and trumpets (ID Rao), the song takes the listener on a mazy journey. This is reflected in the visuals, which depict Alia Bhatt's mysterious Gangubai teasing her young beau (Shantanu Maheshwari). As the percussion seamlessly kicks in, the signature Bhansali rhythm emerges.
The catchy composition reflects the playfulness, seduction, and at times, emotional depth of Gangubai's character. Even as she finds a moment of joy with a lover, she is seeking a friend, someone who can treat her as an equal. This sense of solitude and pain forms the subtext of Bhansali's composition.
Singer Neeti Mohan's vocals blend well with the composition. Her voice and Kumaar's lyrics bring out the vulnerability hidden in the tune. Bhatt and Maheshwari's pairing feels fresh, and the song has been shot well and possesses a subdued blue tint, which dominates the film.
Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Gangubai Kathiawadi has been produced by the filmmaker's banner and Jayantilal Gada's Pen Entertainment. It will be released in theatres on 25 February 2022.
