Actor Gaurav Chakrabarty will be seen as Michael, a character inspired by Macbeth, in Raajhorshee De’s upcoming film Mayaa (2022).

De’s film is a modern adaptation of the Shakespeare tragedy that will bring women and marginalized sections to the forefront.

The multi-starrer film stars Tanushree Chakraborty as the Lady Macbeth-inspired Mrinalini and Rafiath Rashid Mithila as the titular character. The film features Kamaleswar Mukherjee, Sudipta Chakraborty, Gourab Chatterjee, Anindya Chatterjee, Rahul Banerjee, Koneenica Banerjee, Ranieeta Das and Devlina Kumar.

“Not many actors get the opportunity to enact Macbeth, which is one of my favourite characters,” said Gaurav. “I have no similarities with the character, and hence, I had to go through a massive transformation in terms of body language, dialogue delivery and my look.”

For Gaurav, working in Mayaa has given him an opportunity to transform himself. “I am grateful to Raajhorshee Da for casting me and sketching the character with a different perspective. The audience will decide whether I have done justice to the character,” said the actor.

Mrinalini possesses several grey shades and Tanushree found it challenging to bring the character to life. “It is difficult to guess the inevitability of her journey,” Tanushree said. "Whoever has read Macbeth knows that most of the tragedy’s characters are full of ambiguities. I also think that all of Shakespeare’s works and characters are extremely relevant in contemporary times," the actress added.

De is hopeful that the film will be released in the theatres early next year.
