From 83 to Ram Setu: Every Hindi film that will arrive in theatres this year and in 2022

The announcement pertaining to the reopening of cinema halls in Maharashtra has spurred producers into revealing the release dates of long-awaited projects.

The Cinestaan Team

The beleaguered Hindi film industry has heaved a collective sigh of relief now that theatres in the all-crucial state of Maharashtra will be reopened after 22 October. The shutters have been down since April this year when the deadly second wave of COVID-19 hit the nation.

Now that the green signal has been given, a mad dash to reach audiences has been prompted and big banners like Yash Raj Films and Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment have unveiled their lineup for this year and the next.

Here’s a comprehensive list of projects to look forward to:

Bunty Aur Babli 2 — 19 November

Directed by Varun Sharma, the sequel to the 2005 crime caper was set to be released in June 2020. Due to the first wave of the pandemic, it was later added to Yash Raj Films' slate for 2021 and readied for release in April. Now, the Siddhant Chaturvedi, Sharvari Wagh and Saif Ali Khan-starrer will hit the screens on 19 November.

The makers revealed their plans on social media, as part of the flurry of film releases that were announced in wake of the news about the reopening of cinema halls in Maharashtra.

Satyameva Jayate 2 — 26 November

Another sequel that will finally make its way to the movie houses is Milap Zaveri's Satyameva Jayate 2. Starring John Abraham, the film was initially scheduled for a theatrical release on 2 October 2020. The lockdown ensured that the makers had no choice but to move dates.

It later set up a clash with Salman Khan's Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai (2021) in the Eid weekend of 2021. Even when Salman Khan opted for a direct-to-digital release for his action film, the makers of Satyameva Jayate 2 stayed patient. Now, the film is scheduled for a theatrical release on 26 November.

Tadap — 3 December

Sajid Nadiadwala's launch vehicle for Suniel Shetty's son, Ahan, has been waiting to see the light of day since 2020. The film was expected to arrive in theatres on 24 September, before being shifted to 3 December 2021.

Now, the film will be released on 3 December. Featuring Ahan and Tara Sutaria, the film has been helmed by Milan Luthria.

Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui — 10 December

While the film was announced and completed in the lockdown, director Abhishek Kapoor could not find a way to release his Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui. Slotted for a 9 July 2021 release, the project was hampered by the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in India.

With the opening up of theatres, a pumped-up Ayushmann Khurrana shared the announcement of his romance drama with Vaani Kapoor. The film will arrive in the last month of the year, on 10 December.

83 — 25 December

Ranveer Singh's much-anticipated sports drama 83, which revolves around the Indian cricket team's maiden World Cup triumph in 1983, has zeroed in on the vacant spot of Christmas 2021.

The spot was earlier occupied by Aamir Khan's Laal Singh Chaddha. The film will see Singh portray Kapil Dev while Deepika Padukone will play his wife, Romi Dev. Directed by Kabir Khan, 83 was set to be released in April 2020, but it was moved to June 2021 due to the first wave of the pandemic. But the makers had to again change their plans after the second wave of coronavirus and now it will finally make its way to theatres on 25 December in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam.

Jersey — 31 December

Continuing the theme of cricket fever in cinema halls, Shahid Kapoor's awaited Jersey will hit the screens on New Year's Eve, just a week after the release of 83.

The official remake of Telugu hit Jersey (2019), which tells a story of a failed cricketer who decides to return to the pitch in his late thirties to fulfil his son's wish, was initially slated for a theatrical release in August 2020. The date makers later shifted their sights to Diwali 2021, which now has been captured Akshay Kumar's Sooryavanshi. The drama has been directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri, who helmed the original film.

Gangubai Kathiawadi - 6 January 2022

Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Gangubai Kathiawadi, starring Alia Bhatt, reunites the director with the star after the shelved Inshallah.
