The official logo of Raajhorshee De’s upcoming film Mayaa was launched in the presence of the West Bengal minister of sport and youth affairs Madan Mitra as well as the entire cast and crew at a restaurant in Kolkata yesterday.

The film, which is based on William Shakespeare’s Macbeth, is slated to be released in January next year.

“As far as Bangla film is concerned, Mayaa is the first official adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth,” said the director. "It’s basically a subversion from women’s perspective and promotes the idea of women coming at the forefront of power dynamics and globalization," she said,

Bangladeshi actress Rafiath Rashid Mithila has made her debut in Bengali cinema as the titular character of the film. "The story has been told from the perspective of Mayaa, who is the most powerful among all the other strong characters in the film,” said the actress. Mithila was reportedly nervous initially but had a good time during the filming and dubbing session of the film.

The character of Darbar Sharma, who is played by Kamaleswar Mukherjee, is based on Duncan. “Darbar Sharma is the root cause of all the crises in the film. Whether he has been able to do justice to the different shades of the character will be decided by the director and the audience," he said.

Mukherjee praised his co-stars. “I am quite nervous to have been working among such noted actors, but I am also hopeful that the audience will like the film and their encouragement will inspire more filmmakers to venture into such kinds of films,” he added.

National award-winning actress Sudipta Chakraborty will be seen as Reshmi, who is based on one of Macbeth’s three witches. “Reshmi is a character from Uttar Pradesh, who gets married to Darbar Sharma’s son. She has a lot of unfulfilled desires and dissatisfactions from life but her only soft corner is her daughter Avantika [Ranieeta Das], who makes sure to get her mother to bring her out from all her misery,” elaborated Chakraborty. The actress enjoyed playing the layered character, who speaks a different dialect and also has a unique look in the film.

Mayaa features Tanushree Chakraborty, Rahul Banerjee, Gaurav Chatterji, Gaurav Chakrabarty, Koneenica Banerjee, Devlina Kumar, Ishaan Mazumder, and Anindya Chatterjee.
