When we think of films where a large group of characters appear to be having a blast together, the first title that comes to mind is Hum Saath-Saath Hain (1999). Director-turned-actor Hemant Dhome’s Marathi movie Jhimma seems to be another such film.
But there are a couple of major differences. The seven characters who go out on a trip are all females and not all of them are related.
The film tells the story of these women – played by Suhas Joshi, Kshitee Jog, Sonalee Kulkarni, Nirmiti Sawant, Sayali Sanjeev, Mrinmayee Godbole and Suchitra Bandekar – who go on a trip to London in order to get away from it all. The tour is organized by a travel company headed by Kabir (Siddharth Chandekar). In fact, it is the maiden tour of his newly launched firm.
The trailer indicates that the film is a light-hearted affair with good doses of humour. But thanks to the presence of the drama and the conflicts, it doesn’t seem like a film only about sightseeing. What also works in the favour of the film is that the characters are diverse and the casting appears apt.
Jhimma is the first Marathi film to be released in theatres after they were shut due to the second COVID-19 wave. It will arrive in cinema halls on 19 November.
