Born on 25 December 1932, Jog learnt the violin from his brother. He also received training in classical singing from Pandit Gajananrao Joshi and Pandit Narayan Marulkar.
His first big break arrived after composer Sudhir Phadke, who happened to witness a performance by the artiste at a function, invited him to join his orchestra. The musician went on to be a key part of Phadke's iconic Geet Ramayana series of Marathi songs, which were broadcast by All India Radio, Pune in 1955. He also worked as an assistant music composer in the series, composing three songs that were sung by Phadke himself.
Jog also worked as assistant music composer to some icons of Marathi music such as Vasant Prabhu, Yashwant Deo, Hridaynath Mangeshkar and Shrinivas Khale.
His first film as a composer was Jawai Majha Bhala (1962). He went on to compose music for more than 20 films. His last Marathi film was Yeda Ki Khula (1991). The composer's autobiography, Swar Ale Juluni, tracks his journey through music.
