Avijatrik trailer: A soothing and nostalgic cinematic experience

The trailer of Subhrajit Mitra’s upcoming film Avijatrik, which takes off from where Satyajit Ray’s groundbreaking Apu Trilogy ended, induces nostalgia. The evocation of Bibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay’s classic novel Aparajito, the monochrome recreation of a bygone era and the protagonist’s romantic journey make for a soothing cinematic experience.

Based on the concluding section of Bandopadhyay’s novel, Avijatrik is centred on the iconic character Apu (Arjun Chakraborty) and his adventures beyond what was depicted in Ray’s Aparajito (1956). The poetic composition of the trailer does justice to the character’s philosophical outlook on life. The concluding line, “Life is a grand romance, the more you live it, the more it grows on you", and Chakraborty’s dreamy countenance contribute to the depth of the narrative.

Without revealing much, the trailer sees Apu immersing himself in the offerings of life with his son Kajal. He remains a spectator of the interpersonal relationships that define his journey. His experiences while travelling the length and breadth of the country leave him enlightened. He also expresses gratitude for his blissful marital relationship with Aparna (Ditipriya Roy) which gifted him his son and also perhaps seeks closure with his childhood friend Leela (Arpita Pal Chatterjee).

The trailer also features stunning visuals of the then-Calcutta, still replete with Babu culture, and Varanasi where Apu’s formative years unfolded. The visuals not only wow the audience but also hint at how Apu passes on his legacy.

The trailer reveals a sincere attempt to honour Ray. Also, the visuals generate anticipation for Chakraborty's performance.
