Karnan teaser: Sword-wielding Dhanush plays saviour of the masses

Directed by Mari Selvaraj, the film will be released theatrically on 9 April.

Dhanush, who has just won his second National Award, appears to be in prime form in the teaser of Karnan. Directed by Mari Selvaraj, the film is reportedly based on the caste riots which took place in Kodiyankulam in the 1990s.

The teaser is rife with symbolism. An old woman curses an eagle that preys on a helpless chick. As she calls for help, Dhanush as Karnan pulls out a sword and rides a horse out of the darkness. This image is juxtaposed by that of the village deity, also armed and atop a horse.

This mythical imagery is countered by the realistic depiction of helpless villagers. As their saviour arrives, they arm themselves in preparation for a long-overdue battle.

With his understanding of Tamil Nadu's caste divisions, which was explored in Pariyerum Perumal (2018), Selvaraj seems to have another dynamic story in store for viewers. The teaser is taut with tension, and the drama heightened by Dhanush's arrival.

The film, which will also feature Rajisha Vijayan and Yogi Babu, will be released theatrically on 9 April.
