Abhay Deol, an actor who is known for his distinct choices of projects, will be seen next in Disney's Indian-American coming-of-age teen drama Spin.

The English film has been helmed by Manjari Makijany, who recently directed the Netflix film Skater Girl (2021), another coming-of-age tale of a teenage girl.

But unlike Makijany's previous directorial venture, which was set in rural India, her upcoming film tells the story of an Indian-American teen, Rhea Kumar, played by Avantika Vandanapu, who discovers her passion for creating DJ mixes. Deol plays Rhea’s father Arvind Kumar.

Deol had shared the trailer for the film last month, calling it a departure from the usual edgy, alternative narratives he is known for.

"I am aware that most of my audience loves me for making edgy, alternative narratives that challenge the status quo," he wrote. "Which is why this film is all the more special as it is a departure from my own status quo and catering to a much younger audience.”

The film also features Meera Syal, Aryan Simhadri, Agam Darshi, Anna Cathcart and Michela Luci in supporting roles.

Spin is scheduled to be released in India on 15 August on Disney+ Hotstar two days after its US premiere on Disney International HD.
