Tamil film Kuthiraivaal has gained the distinction of becoming the first Indian film to be premiered at Woche der Kritik (Berlin Critics' Week) this year. Directed by Manoj Leonel Jahson, the film is a magical realist tale. Backed by Pa Ranjith's Neelam Productions and Yaazhi Films, the film stars Kalaiyarasan and Anjali Patil.

Written by G Rajesh, the film is centred on a man who wakes up to find out that he has a horsetail.

The teaser for the film, which went on floors in 2018, captures these surreal elements in a dreamlike fashion. As Kalaiyarasan's character wakes up from a dream, where he comes across a horse with no tail, he finds that a part of the dream has stayed back with him. He now has a tail that he has no way of controlling, or hiding.

Considering the pandemic situation, the 71st Berlin International Film Festival will take place in two stages. The festival will see an online gathering of the film industry, the European Film Market, in March. The competition and film selected will be announced through February, while the month of June will see a new summer event with film screenings for the public.
