Sridhar Rangayan’s Evening Shadows wins award at YathaKatha film festival


The film has travelled to as many as 75 international festivals and won 25 awards.

Sridhar Rangayan’s feature film Evening Shadows (2019) has been awarded the Best LGBTQ Feature Film at the recently concluded YathaKatha International Film & Literature Festival, held in a physical format, in Mumbai.

Sridhar Rangayan was presented the award by Maharashtra governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari.

Evening Shadows is about a gay son coming out to his mother in a small town in southern India. The film focuses on the mother’s dilemma of accepting her son and standing up as a woman against the patriarchal society. The film has travelled to 75 festivals around the world and won 25 awards.

Speaking about the win, writer-director Sridhar, who is also director of the annual Kashish Mumbai International Queer Film Festival, said, “We were so thrilled to be screening Evening Shadows at a physical festival after the long two-year lockdown. Receiving the award for Best LGBTQ Feature Film is the icing on the cake. We are thrilled to continue the journey of this important film that has been touching the hearts of critics and audiences worldwide for the past three years.”

Charu Sharma, director of the YathaKatha International Film & Literature Festival, said, “Evening Shadows is a brilliant narrative expressing the bitter reality of our so-called civilized society... it breaks the stereotypical portrayal of a minor community on screen and clears many such taboos.”

Evening Shadows will be screened at the Hyderabad Queer Film Festival along with Gulabi Aaina (The Pink Mirror), which is Sridhar's first film. Gulabi Aaina has been screened at more than 80 festivals across the world and has won awards in France and the USA.

Evening Shadows is also available on Netflix.
