Writer Tahira Kashyap is set to make her debut as a director with the upcoming feature Sharmaji Ki Beti. Starring Saiyami Kher, Sakshi Tanwar and Divya Dutta, the film will be backed by Applause Entertainment.

Kashyap's husband, actor Ayushmann Khurrana, shared the news on social media on Thursday.

A note from the makers reads, "This relatable, multi-generational ensemble comedy-drama about the modern, middle-class family experience will be headlined by super talents like Sakshi Tanwar, Divya Dutta, and Saiyami Kher. The film while true to India, also promises to resonate with Gen Z, millennials and boomers across the world, represented by the various Sharmas in the film."

Kashyap has previously directed segments in Zindagi In Short (2020) and Feels Like Ishq (2021). Her debut will also be backed by Atul Kasbekar's Ellipsis Entertainment.

In a post, Kashyap wrote, "Feeling so numb! Can’t believe it’s finally happening. I feel only gratitude...Eternally grateful to all those people who are bringing my dream, the story so close to my heart to life. It’s too good to be true but I guess ‘winter always turns to spring’. This film has seen me through various states and stages of life but all that I have learned from my practice, my mother and my partner is to never give up. And I was supported with like-minded people who were there through and through with me on this journey, Thank you."

The producer's note further reads, "A slice-of-life rollercoaster of aspirations, fantasies, families, inadequacies, coming-of-age and heartbreak, Sharmaji Ki Beti may be a story of the Sharmas, but it promises to strike a chord with people from all walks of life, being a story of mothers, daughters, partners, friends, and ultimately womanhood - the perfect antidote to the default male gaze that dominates popular cinema."

Tanwar was recently seen in the OTT release Dial 100 alongside Neena Gupta and Manoj Bajpayee, while Kher was part of the Nagarjuna-starrer Wild Dog (2021) on Netflix. Divya Dutta is part of Kangana Ranaut's upcoming thriller Dhaakad and has finished shooting for the project.
