Amitabh Bachchan will be replacing the late Rishi Kapoor in the Hindi remake of the Hollywood film The Intern (2015). The makers of the Hindi film, which also stars Deepika Padukone, announced that Badhaai Ho (2018) director Amit Ravindernath Sharma would be joining the project as well.

The project, which was due to be released this year, was delayed owing to Kapoor’s untimely death last April. Bachchan was a frequent collaborator of Kapoor’s since the 1970s.

Padukone made the announcement today with a cheery yellow poster of The Intern (2022) which shows silhouettes of herself and Bachchan walking towards each other. The two co-stars played father and daughter in Shoojit Sircar’s award-winning Piku (2015).

The Hollywood film, written and directed by Nancy Meyers, starred Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro. The legendary actor played Ben, a retired executive, who joins a company run by Hathaway’s character, Jules, through a unique senior citizen internship programme.

Padukone, who is also co-producer on the project with Sunil Kheterpal, will play the part that was made famous by Hathaway. Sharma, who has also the period film Maidaan (2021) starring Ajay Devgn, lined up for release, is also co-producing The Intern along with Aleya Sen, Hemant Bhandari and Gaurav Bose.

The screenplay and dialogues will be written by Akshat Ghildial and Mitesh Shah. The Intern is expected to be released in the summer of 2022.
