A week ago, director Anubhav Sinha and actor Manoj Bajpayee announced their upcoming collaboration without sharing any details. This misled many to believe that they were doing a film together.

It is now learnt that Sinha and Bajpayee have joined hands for a Bhojpuri single. Bajpayee will be singing the song and will also appear in the music video.

The only time the two had collaborated earlier was for Bajpayee’s first television serial Shikast way back in 1993.

Produced by Bhushan Kumar’s T-Series, the song in question is called ‘Bambai Mein Ka Ba’. It is the duo's attempt to revive Bhojpuri music.

Speaking to the Mumbai Mirror newspaper, Sinha said, “Back in the 1970s, Bhojpuri music was an integral part of 'Bollywood' [commercial Hindi cinema]. Songs like ‘Chalat Musafir Moh Liya Re’ and ‘Ee Hai Bambai Nagariya’ played in every household, like Punjabi music today. In the last 25 years, it [Bhojpuri music] has become crass, shunned by families, and plays only in paan [betel-leaf] and chai [tea] shops. ‘Khaike Paan Banaraswala’ is among the last classy Bhojpuri songs.”

Sinha has dedicated the new song to his late mother. “I lost my mother in 2012. After that, Bhojpuri disappeared from my life. This song is in her memory,” the Thappad  (2020) director said.

The filmmaker added that the song was finalized through a casual conversation with Bajpayee. “We were discussing Bhojpuri music and I sent him my composition. He loved it. I asked him to sing it and feature in the music video. The next day, he was at the studio, rehearsing, and in a week, we were on the set. It’s a song about migrant workers,” said Sinha.
