Several recent films have explored the human condition during the COVID-19 pandemic and Kabeer Khurana’s short The Hangout is one such film that explores human values and compassion during the extraordinary circumstances created by the outbreak and the ensuing lockdown.
Romi (Arjan Singh Aujla) is a burnt-out musician who finds inspiration when he has a conversation with social activist Alia (Anisa Butt). When their company announces a drastic pay cut, the move elicits different responses from different people. Alia is moved by the plight of the migrant labourers making their way home, stranded without food, and wishes to do something for them. Romi is inspired by her commitment and moved to take action on his own.
The film emphasizes that even though we are distanced from one another and home-bound, we can still make a difference to those who are less fortunate.
Speaking about her character, Butt said, “This little gem of a script came my way and in a short amount of screen time Kabeer managed to capture how the lockdown affected different people differently. There is a beautiful element of hope at the end for both characters. I think Alia, the character, pays tribute to the way a lot of people are currently feeling in India. The script deals with identity in the current climate, our response to uncertainty, but also love, hope and bonding.”
Besides its award-winning director Khurana, the film has Rohan Parikh as the creative producer and has been produced by Exposition Pictures. The co-producer of the film, Ramneek Sawhney, said, “Life’s pace and strain stop many from finding their true calling. The stillness of the lockdown changed that. Distance has improved relationships, life is seeing new meaning.”
The short film, produced by Simran Lakhanpal, Rohan Parikh, and Ramneek Sawhney, will be premiered on Disney+ Hotstar today.
