The Malayalam documentary Thariode will now be made into a feature film. It will be directed by Nirmal Baby Varghese who has also helmed the documentary. The movie will star international actors like Bill Hutchens, Luing Andrews, Alexx O’Nell, Courtney Sanello, Amelie Leroy and Brendan Byrne.
The documentary is about the history of gold mining in Thariode, which is a village in Wayanad, Kerala, and its impact on the environment. The feature film is titled Thariode: The Lost City (2022). Elements of fiction will be added to make it more suitable for a feature film.
Revealing details about the documentary, Varghese said in an official statement, “Thariode tells the story of gold mining in Thariode, one of the most ancient cities of Malabar region - a long, narrow coastline on the south-western shore of the mainland Indian subcontinent. The film also charts the history of gold mining in Thariode and other areas of Malabar in the 19th century.”
The documentary is narrated by the National Award-winning actor Aliyar and its background score has been composed by Owain Hoskins.
Recently, Thariode entered the final round of the Best Trailer category at the Košice International Monthly Film Festival in Košice, Slovak Republic. The trailer has some beautiful long shots of Thariode and some underwater visuals as well.
