Darbaan trailer: Sharib Hashmi plays a loyal servant who is accused of a crime

Someone like Rabindranath Tagore needs no introduction to South Asian audiences. The great literary and music figure was also known for his short stories. But despite the huge volume of literature produced by Tagore, Hindi cinema has hardly explored it. With Bipin Nadkarni’s Darbaan, we will have a Hindi film based on a Tagore short story after a long time.
The film sees Sharib Hashmi play Raicharan, servant of a family at a hill station. He has a close bond with his master’s kid Anukul (whose grown-up version is played by the Marathi actor Sharad Kelkar). Raicharan is married to Rasika Duggal’s character. A tragedy separates him from the family. Years later Anukul is reunited with Raicharan and gives him the responsibility of looking after his little son.
Raicharan is delighted to serve and spend time with Anukul’s kid. However, one day the child disappears when Raicharan had taken him out. Anukul and his wife (Flora Saini) accuse Raicharan of stealing their son. The heartbroken Raicharan sets out on a quest to redeem himself.
Tagore’s story is not only emotional, but also laden with mystery. And going by the trailer, one can hope for Darbaan to be a good film. The only issue is that too much is revealed in the slightly over two-and-a-half-minute trailer. There is a moment where Raicharan is even accused of murdering the child. We are also shown him reuniting with the kid who has become a teenager. We just hope these are not spoilers.
Hashmi seems to have got the emotional quotient right in his act again. Kelkar and Saini don’t feature too much in the trailer.
Darbaan will be released on 2 April. Watch the trailer below and let us know if you would be watching the film.
