The biopic starring Vicky Kaushal in the role of the freedom fighter was to release in January 2021, but is likely to be delayed now.

The shutdown of the film industry due to the lockdown since mid-March had brought a halt to the post-production work of many films. Director Shoojit Sircar’s Sardar Udham Singh was one of them. But now with the state government allowing post-production on films to begin, work on the freedom fighter's biopic has resumed.
Sircar shared his happiness over this development on Instagram. In fact, such was the filmmaker's happiness that he penned a poem on resuming work on the film. He followed the poem with, “Can’t wait to reboot, with post production of Sardar Udham Singh – set to Begin Again, tomorrow – 8 June.”
When nature beckoned, We listened… We switched gears, From fast forward to slow motion... Now, there is a call again, a second coming, An excitement, yet a caution… And a hunger to reboot, A thirst to get back in… With this feeling, We begin, again... #SardarUdhamSingh Can’t wait to #reboot, with post production of #SardarUdhamSingh – set to #BeginAgain, tomorrow – 8th June @vickykaushal09 @filmsrisingsun @kinoworks @ronnielahiri @writish1 #Shubendu #Avik Mukhopadhyay @moitrashantanu @shekharpraja @jitu.gupta87 @bhargavoza2020 @singhal_tushar @sayanghosh_29. @corneliuspia @banitasandhu @veerakapuree @amolparashar @kumarthakur1 @bhanubabbal @vibhutitomar @fakelabeeb @mithillad
The same post and poem was soon posted by Vicky Kaushal, who plays the titular role of Udham Singh in the movie.
In a conversation with IndianExpress.com, producer Ronnie Lahiri said they will be taking utmost precaution. “We are taking the requisite precautions stated by the Maharashtra government. We already have an edit suite in our office, so there will be two people working on the edit of the film which will take about two-three months. They will be working in shifts, and the office space will be duly sanitized. Our editors will also be taking the necessary precautions, but since there are only two people, it shouldn’t be much of a problem to manage things,” he said.
Sardar Udham Singh was earlier supposed to release in October 2020 but was then shifted to January 2021. But Lahiri feels it might not be possible to release the film during that time.
“We have already lost over two months to this pandemic. And there are a lot of things that need to be taken into account once the actual shoot stops and the post-production work begins. The editing alone would take us about close to three months, and then we will have to talk to the visual effects team. So a January release seems unlikely. In fact, we don’t have a clear release date in mind as of now,” added Lahiri.
The film is based on the life of India’s freedom fighter Shaheed Udham Singh, who assassinated the former lieutenant governor of Punjab, Michael O’Dwyer to avenge the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre of 1919. The film also stars Banita Sandhu, who had made her debut with Sircar's October (2018).
