A new animation series, Hasya Kavi Potliwala, conceptualised and produced by Feroz Abbas Khan, addresses important COVID-19 issues and creates general awareness amongst the public. The bi-weekly series has been created by the Population Foundation of India (PFI) in partnership with the Indian government and Facebook.

The national level campaign will “curate and create verified, reliable, and updated communication materials on COVID-19” in multiple languages.

Khan addresses what the series hopes to achieve, “We want to trigger a behaviour change through the humour, poetry and instantly likable character of Hasya Kavi Potliwala.”

Poonam Muttreja, Population Foundation of India’s executive director, adds, “There is an overload of information on social media and it is extremely hard to sift the truth from falsehood. PFI has worked on behavioural change strategies through entertainment shows for the empowerment of women in the past. We felt that in such sombre times we need the right information to empower ourselves and some humour to tide over these grave times. Hasya Kavi Potliwala is an attempt to capture both.”

Hasya Kavi Potliwala, which features the character narrating a short poem about COVID-19 issues, was launched on the MyGov platform on the pandemic. The character addresses topics like the use of masks, physical distancing, along with COVID-19 precautions, stigma and discrimination. It uses entertainment to educate and share essential messages.
