Actor-director Parambrata Chatterjee is all set to direct the biopic of thespian Soumitra Chatterjee, who turned 85 last Sunday.

Parambrata made the announcement on Soumitra’s 85th birthday. Jisshu Sengupta will play the young Soumitra while the veteran will play his older self.

“It is an honour that a towering personality like Soumitra Chatterjee has given his consent for a biopic," Parambrata said in a statement to the Business Standard newspaper. "He is an institution of acting for every showbiz performer.”

Parambrata has directed a few films already: Jiyo Kaka (2011), Hawa Badal (2013), Lorai (2015) and Shonar Pahar (2018).

The biopic attempts to capture Soumitra Chatterjee’s 60 years in cinema, a span in which he has worked with all the top directors of Bengali cinema like Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen, Tapan Sinha, Tarun Majumdar, Rituparno Ghosh, Atanu Ghosh, Srijit Mukherji and Shiboprosad Mukherjee and Nandita Roy.

Soumitra is also the first Indian actor to receive the Commandeur de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and the coveted Legion of Honour from the government of France. He is also a Dadasaheb Phalke awardee.

In the film, critically acclaimed independent filmmaker Qaushiq Mukherjee, better known as Q, will be playing Satyajit Ray, Paoli Dam will play Suchitra Sen, and Sohini Sarkar will be seen as Madhabi Mukherjee. Rudranil Ghosh will make a guest appearance as the comedian Rabi Ghosh.

The director said, “I needed an actor who is flexible enough to change himself into looks of different ages. Hence, I chose Jisshu. Also, to play Soumitra Chatterjee, the actor had to be both good-looking and a good performer.”

Shooting for the film is slated to begin early next month.
