The film was to have been Southern star Keerthy's debut in Hindi cinema.

Recent reports had claimed that Southern star Keerthy Suresh had opted out of Boney Kapoor’s upcoming production Maidaan.
The reports suggested that the decision was taken after the actress and producer Boney Kapoor both agreed that Keerthy, who had been critically and popularly acclaimed for her portrayal of yesteryear star Savitri in Mahanati (2018), does not look old enough to play the wife of Ajay Devgn, who plays the male lead in the film.
Now, it is official that Keerthy is no longer part of the film. She has been replaced by another South Indian actress, Priyamani.
The news is confirmed by the film’s publicist in a media statement that said: “National award-winning actress Priyamani to be paired opposite Ajay Devgn in Maidaan, the true story of the golden years of Indian football.”
The film was supposed to have been Keerthy Suresh’s entry into Hindi cinema, but that was not to be.
Maidaan will mark Priyamani’s return to Hindi cinema after 10 years. Her last film in Hindi was Ram Gopal Varma’s Rakht Charitra (2010). Earlier that year, she had made her Hindi film debut with Mani Ratnam’s Raavan (2010).
Maidaan is based on the life of Indian national football coach Syed Abdul Rahim who is also known as the architect of modern Indian football. Devgn plays Rahim. The film is being directed by Amit Ravindernath Sharma, whose previous film Badhaai Ho (2018), starring Ayushmann Khurrana, Gajraj Rao and Neena Gupta was a runaway success.
Produced by Boney Kapoor and Zee Studios, Maidaan is slated for release on 27 November.
