Always used to ask Mohit Suri why didn’t we work after Kalyug, says Kunal Kemmu on Malang

Kunal Kemmu arrived on the celluloid for the first time as a child actor in Mahesh Bhatt’s Zakhm (1998), where he played the younger version of actor Ajay Devgn's character. His debut as a lead actor was with Mohit Suri’s Kalyug (2005), which was produced by Bhatt.
Although the film became a surprise hit, it took Kemmu and Suri 15 years to come back together with Malang (2020). Kemmu said during a recent media interaction that he always had this question for Suri as to why they didn’t work again all these years.
“I used to always ask him why haven’t we worked again,” the actor actor. “One day he said, ‘With Kalyug, we set a bar. I feel after that whatever I do with you, I will always be judged with Kalyug. So we have to push the envelope so that people can’t say that we didn’t create the same magic.'"
Kemmu said that after watching the final product of Malang he understood more what Suri meant. “It’s so special in so many ways because even with Kalyug, I was breaking the mould with a child actor. Now with Malang, it’s a part I have never played. I also feel parts like these don’t get written so often,” he said.
During Kalyug, Suri was 23 while Kemmu was just 21. When Kemmu was asked what changes or growth has he seen in Suri in these 15 years, he said a lot of people will talk about his growth and changes but he looks beyond that.
“What I love and appreciate about him is the things he has kept intact, whether it is his sense of music, which has always stood the test of time. He understands relationships very nicely. That’s also because it’s whole Bhatt sahab’s mentoring,” said Kemmu.
Also starring Disha Patani, Aditya Roy Kapur and Anil Kapoor, Malang will be releasing on 7 February.
