'Masakali 2.0' song: Sidharth Malhotra, Tara Sutaria cannot save this mediocre remake of a lyrical classic

Recreated by Tanishk Bagchi, the song is a remake of the original by AR Rahman from the film Delhi-6, directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra.

The country might be in lockdown, but nothing, it seems, can stop Tanishk Bagchi from churning out yet another remix. The composer seems to be digging into the treasure trove of copyrights with T-Series and coming up with 'new' remixes. The latest is a changeover of AR Rahman's 'Masakali' from Delhi-6 (2009). Sung by Tulsi Kumar and Sachet Tandon, the song has additional lyrics by Bagchi himself.

The song features Marjaavaan (2019) co-stars Sidharth Malhotra and Tara Sutaria, whose chemistry is less than convincing. While the original was a beautiful, lyrical treat, the remake is more of a dance-number-meets-slow-rhythm pop. The song has neither the feel nor the freedom of the original, but transports it into the more stereotyped romantic setting for a couple. Naturally, this requires a drastic change of Prasoon Joshi's wonderful lyrics, a change that does not produce the right results.

The composition is nothing new from Bagchi, the addition of a faster rhythm and percussion an attempt to transform the song into a dance track. While it might work with the DJs, it does not have the same charm as the old one. Bagchi's composition is further let down by the lyrics, which are simplistic and too casual to evoke any emotion.

The composer does have the skills to create something better, but this one is definitely among his more forgettable remixes.
