Earlier this year, Vidya Balan signed on to play the late mathematician Shakuntala Devi titled Shakuntala Devi: Human Computer. Now Vidya’s first-look teaser from the film is out.
She was extraordinary, in every sense of the word! Know the story of the child prodigy & the human computer, #ShakuntalaDevi @sonypicsprodns @Abundantia_Ent @anumenon1805 @vikramix @SnehaRajani pic.twitter.com/P2PAqPp5Tt— vidya balan (@vidya_balan) September 16, 2019
The teaser gives us a brief introduction to Shakuntala Devi. Generally, kids start learning maths with basic arithmetic. But the late mathematics genius started off by solving sums involving large numbers. This was why she came to be known as the Human Computer.
At the same time, we are told that apart from being a genius and witty, she was also eccentric, ruthless, selfish, outspoken and a child prodigy. This suggests that the biopic won’t be a whitewash job, something that mainstream Hindi cinema seems to specialize in.
The voiceover describing Shakuntala Devi is pleasant and provides a positive feeling.
Shakuntala Devi was known to sport short hair, going by her images available on the internet. Vidya is seen sporting the same look in terms of the hair and sari in the first poster of the film which has also been released. The first look shows her as the younger version of Shakuntala Devi.
Directed by Anu Menon, Shakuntala Devi: Human Computer will be released in the summer of 2020.
