Hrithik Roshan and Tiger Shroff's War (2019) has set the box office on fire with a record opening-day collection of Rs51.50 crore nett, as per figures shared by BoxOfficeIndia.com.

Directed by Siddharth Anand, War has broken the opening-day record of Aamir Khan and Amitabh Bachchan's dud Thugs Of Hindostan (2018), which had opened with Rs48.27 crore nett last November. Both War and Thugs Of Hindostan are Yash Raj Films productions.

After the record opening, Thugs Of Hindostan had crashed from the very second day because of the poor reviews and negative word-of-mouth publicity. This probably won’t happen with War since the reaction from critics and audiences have been decent.

War's opening is obviously way ahead of the previous highest for both the film's stars Hrithik Roshan and Tiger Shroff. Indeed, it has doubled for both. Before this film, Shroff’s highest opening collection was Rs25 crore nett for Baaghi 2 (2018) while Hrithik’s was Rs24.40 crore nett for Bang Bang (2014), directed by the same Siddharth Anand.

As per BoxOfficeIndia.com, War was released on just 3,850 screens across India because of competition from the multilingual period film Syeraa Narasimha Reddy and the Hollywood film Joker. Generally such big films get around 4,700 screens. The reduced number of screens may well have cost War a further Rs5 crore nett at the ticket counters.

As per our trade sources, War has been made on a budget of around Rs150 crore. The film will, therefore, need to keep up the hectic pace till the first weekend at the very least.
