Actor-producer Prosenjit Chatterjee has given the award for Best Actor in a Lead Role that he won for his performance in Jyeshthoputro (2019) at the Bharat Bangladesh Film Awards on 21 October in Dhaka, Bangladesh, to Riddhi Sen.
Prosenjit said the youngster, who won the National award in 2018 for his stellar performance as a transgender in Nagarkirtan, was the more deserving candidate.
Prosenjit said it is important to hand over one's legacy to able artistes of the next generation. He also said the act does not make his recognition any less, but builds relations between the generations. The award has already been sent to Sen.
According to a report in the Anandabazar Patrika newspaper, Prosenjit said, “There is an abundance of talent in Kolkata and Bangladesh; however, we are not able to use it properly because of the political division between the two countries. For the same reason, Bengali cinema is losing its market too.”
He said that if the two industries were to unite, making films like the Baahubali franchise would not remain a far-fetched idea. “The awards are not that important," said the actor who was once referred to in Kolkata as 'The Industry'. "We have been working towards creating this platform for the last 10 years. We want to represent Bangla cinema from both regions; there should not be any discrimination. Our efforts will pay off the day we achieve this goal.”
