Berij Vajabaki has a long list of acclaimed artistes in the cast but the trailer quickly kills any expectation that may have aroused.
Berij Vajabaki trailer: Or how not to cut a promo for your film
Mumbai - 27 Nov 2019 22:00 IST
Berij Vajabaki stars well-known artistes like Nandu Madhav [of Harishchandrachi Factory (2010) fame], Mohan Joshi, Devika Daftardar, Upendra Limaye and Pravin Tarde.
When you see a film put such a powerful ensemble cast together, your expectations are bound to be heightened. But worry not. The trailer of the film produced and directed by Raju Bhosale stops you right there.
Going by the promo, Berij Vajabaki revolves around an honest, simple teacher (Madhav) who takes great joy in teaching the curriculum as well as extra-curricular activities like sculpture.
But all hell breaks loose for him and his students when a businessman decides to build a mall in place of the school. Later, it is decided that if the school can win the School of the Year title (such an original one, isn't it?), the businessman will donate 50% of his land for the school.
The idea of a school being saved if its students can win a sports tournament was the theme of Divya Kumar’s directorial debut dud Yaariyan (2014). Now, why should one get ‘inspired’ by an illogical idea, you may wonder. But that will be the least of your concerns.
The trailer is juvenile, to say the least, not just in terms of the flow but also the content. The makers have saved the best (read: worst) for the last where a kid falls down a cliff and the title of the film appears.
Nandu Madhav had played a village schoolmaster in Jana Gana Mana (2012). But it may be best to avoid drawing any parallels with that acclaimed film.
Berif Vajabaki will be released on 13 December. Watch the trailer below and let us know if you plan to watch this film.
