Actor Vijay’s latest release Bigil, which is still running to packed houses in Tamil Nadu, has dethroned Ajith’s Viswasam (2019) to emerge as the year's highest grossing film in the state with a collection of Rs141.05 crore.

According to a report by the box-office tracking portal Cinetrak, Bigil, at the end of its fourth weekend in cinemas, grossed Rs141.05 crore in Tamil Nadu, beating Viswasam's lifetime collection of Rs138 crore.

The website said, “Bigil is the second Rs200 crore grosser of the year among Southern films [in the India market] after Saaho. Vijay is the fourth actor to conquer the [Rs200 crore] peak after Rajinikanth, Prabhas [with Baahubali: The Conclusion (2017) and Saaho (2019)] and Yash [with KGF (2018)].

Bigil, according to the report, needs to collect Rs3.50 crore more to beat the lifetime earning in the Tamil Nadu territory of the Tamil version of Baahubali 2. However, Baahubali 2 was dubbed in Tamil; therefore, Bigil is the highest grossing Tamil film in Tamil Nadu.

Directed by Atlee, Bigil marked the filmmaker’s third consecutive collaboration with Vijay. It is the third film for Vijay, after Mersal (2017) and Sarkar (2018), to gross over Rs200 crore at the worldwide box office.

Bigil stars Vijay in a double role, as an aged gangster and the coach of a women’s football team. Vijay plays a player turned coach after he is forced to stop playing following an incident involving his gangster father.

Bigil, which also stars Nayanthara, Jackie Shroff, Kathir and Induja, was produced on a whopping budget of Rs180 crore by AGS Entertainment.
