SOTY 2 song 'Jatt Ludhiyane Da': Tara chases Tiger in this hummable, but superficial Vishal-Shekhar number

With the CBSE results out, one wonders how much percentage it takes to get admissions into colleges that Dharma Productions dream up. The latest song, 'Jatt Ludhiyane Da', from Student Of The Year 2 is another Punjabi pop number that feels like a visual ode to high fashion and glamour rather than the blossoming of a college romance that it is.

The song is sung by Vishal Dadlani and Payal Dev, with Dev taking the lead in this one.
Picturised mainly on Tara Sutaria's character, the song is her confession of love to Tiger Shroff. The lyrics by Anvita Dutt are in a mix of Punjabi and Hindi and capture the new language of Hinglish to keep up with the new generation. But none of the verses are memorable or stand out.

Deane Sequeira's rap portion in the middle (picturised on Ananya Panday) is in keeping with the trend of using rap verses for songs, but seems an odd fit to the visual composition. It feels like Panday has been squeezed in to add another element to the song, which fails to come through.

Overall, the composition by Vishal-Shekhar has a nice rhythm and a hummable quality. But it fails to rise above as a song that is either memorable for its composition, lyrics, or visual elements. It is pleasant to the ear, but not a standout composition in the album.

The song is also a throwback to the old style of romantic confessions when the stylish heroine would often chase the quiet stoic hero confessing her love, fully playing on the 'Dilli ki ladki' and 'Jatt ladka' stereotypes.

For all the talk of progressive cinema, Dharma seems to be turning back the time in this college romance. Credit where it is due, the song is shot with the aesthetics of a designer planning the next line for Abercrombie & Fitch. Sadly, the same level of innovation is lacking in the melody.

Student Of The Year 2 is directed by Punit Malhotra, and will be released on 10 May.
